 Welcome, or "Woezor" as we say in Atorkor, to our website. The Atorkor Development Foundation (ADF) is a non-profit development organisation based in Ghana and the UK. ADF was established in 2001 to help overcome poverty in Atorkor, a deprived fishing village in Southern Ghana.
 ADF's vision is to transform Atorkor from a deprived village into a self-sustaining village with basic amenities - jobs, a health centre, clean drinking water for all, well-equipped schools and vocational centre, electricity and affordable communication facilities for all.

 In Atorkor the average life expectancy is 57. One out of every nine children dies before reaching their 5th birthday as a result of preventable childhood illness. The infant mortality rate is 58 per 1,000 live births and 25% of children under five are malnourished. The nearest rural hospital is over 27 km away and is overstretched with only one doctor to every 13,000 patients ? even nurses are in short supply with only 1 nurse to every 650 patients.
This is why the ADF have launched the Atorkor Community HealthCare Programme (ACHCP). The ACHCP is a community based healthcare initiative aimed at providing cost effective and affordable healthcare services right to the doorstep of the people of Atorkor. At its bedrock the ACHCP support initiatives in Primary Health Care, Health Education and Preventive Health Care, Screening and Immunisation and the creation of a Basic Health Care Centre.
There are 16,000 people living in Atorkor and the surrounding villages. Basic health care education & preventive health care can reduce deaths caused by Malaria, Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Diseases/Stroke, HIV/AIDS and Abortion. When you register on this site you can elect to receive our "Friends of Atorkor" newsletter. We promise not to give your details away to anyone else and we won't bombard you with email after email - we just want to stay in touch. So you'll receive an occasional news update and you can unsubscribe at any time. As part of the registration process we also ask what your special skills are - if you are happy to offer your expertise and time then please include details of this on the registration form.
